DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The mission of the Department of Finance is to maintain and improve the intellectual environment that encourages creation and dissemination of knowledge. The Department of Finance has award winning faculty with excellent teaching credentials. The department has been ranked 24th in the nation for scholarly output, in a recent compilation of knowledge disseminated in the most respected academic outlets over the past four years.

The department has a long-term commitment to research excellence among its faculty and doctoral students. In a study published in Financial Management in 2002 the Department was ranked 35th in the nation in number of articles published in the top three journals in the field and 21st in the top 16 journals. This research activity enables us to continuously upgrade course content to make it contemporary and relevant to modern business needs.

The Department of Finance has an immense commitment to its students. The efforts of the department are directed towards providing the students with the required global exposure in addition to the essential subject knowledge. It has a reputation of producing graduates with strong quantitative skills and is presently focusing on strengthening the knowledge of our students the computer applications of finance and student involvement in international programs and in study abroad opportunities.

Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business has been named a CFA Program Partner of CFA Institute, the global, non-profit professional association that administers the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) curriculum and examination program. Please see link for details.

CFP® (Certified Financial Planner) is the premier designation in the financial advisor profession.  The department has implemented a CFP® Certification Education track that satisfies the education requirements of the CFP Board of Standards; therefore, students completing the track are eligible to sit for the CFP exam prior to gaining 3 years of professional experience.  For more information about the requirements and benefits of becoming a CFP, please visit http://www.cfp.net/
