Teaching:
Dr. Shome currently teaches Investment Banking to MBA and graduate students and Corporate Finance at the doctoral level. He has won several teaching awards at Virginia Tech. He is a two-time winner of the Teaching Excellence Award, winner of the PhD Teaching Award, and winner of the University Certificate of Teaching Excellence. He has taught many different courses at the undergraduate, MBA and doctoral levels.
He has also taught in China and as part of a study abroad program in the UK.
Research:
Dr. Shome's research focuses on decisions made by managers, and how and why these decisions are not always directed towards the best interests of shareholders and stakeholders. This is also known as agency relationship. Some of his research studies show that regulated electric utilities companies pay very high dividends in order to induce monitoring of the agency relationship. He has around 15 articles published in various academic and practitioner journals. Some of his publications appear in popular journals such as the Journal of Finance and Financial Management. He has presented his research at various conferences organized by the Financial Management Association, American Finance Association and others.
Business Experience:
Prior to graduate study, Dr. Shome worked for a period of 9 years as a Developmental Manager for Hindustan Lever Ltd, India.
Service-Related Contributions:
Dr Shome served as a Department Head for 4 years. He has also served as a committee member on various department committees such as Ph.D. Policy Committee, Department Head Search Committee and Undergraduate Curriculum Committee. He has served as the Director for the Ph.D. program in Finance for 3 years. He has been a board member of the FMA Survey and Synthesis Services.
Professional Achievements:
Dr. Shome was a co-leader of a Summer Study Abroad Program to the UK. He has taught in China at the Jianxi Institute of Finance and Economics. He has worked in setting up an in-residence program in Freiburg, Germany. He co-chaired an International Conference of "Financial Markets in Emerging Market Economies" at the Pamplin College of Business.
