Teaching:
Mr. Klock's primary teaching responsibility is the introductory-level skills and concepts course. He is also teaching at Hollins University in Roanoke, VA where he teaches a variety of business courses including Intro to Business and Personal Finance.
Research:
Mr. Klock's research interests include how personal risk tolerance influences investing decisions, and the uses of board governance to assist in the oversight of management decisions. A recent article on risk tolerance and projection bias appeared in The Journal of Investing .
Business Experience:
Mr. Klock worked in the banking and brokerage industry for nearly five years in both bank management and as a personal and small business investment consultant. He was frequently called upon to teach training classes on various investing topics such as IRAs and other qualified retirement plans. He also played an active role in developing and marketing new product delivery systems for bank-based investment representatives including a qualified retirement plan platform for small businesses in conjunction with several large insurance and mutual fund companies.
Since leaving banking, Mr. Klock has worked as an independent financial advisor and consultant. He has developed print and Internet financial education tools, including the co-development of personal financial planning educational software packages for collegiate-level textbooks.
Service-Related Contributions:
Mr. Klock serves the industry as a small-business consultant and as a reviewer for the Journal of Personal Finance. He serves the university as co-trainer for the Virginia Tech Ameriprise (formerly American Express) Collegiate Financial Planning Invitational team, which has won the national competition twice in the last four years. He has also served for 4 years as a panelist for the Graduate Honor System. Mr. Klock also served the nation in the military where he was twice decorated for meritorious achievement during his service as a Drill Sergeant.
Professional Achievements:
Mr. Klock is currently a board member for the International Association of Registered Financial Consultants (IARFC). He is co-author on a financial planning textbook, expects to have another book forthcoming in fall 2007, and has also written ancillary materials for a top-ranking personal financial management text. He either currently or has previously held the Virginia State Life and Health Agents License, and the National Association of Security Dealers (NASD) Series 6, 7, and 63 Registrations. He also holds the Registered Financial Consultant (RFC) designation.
