Past winner of the Teaching Excellence Award, Dr. Patterson is an outstanding and innovative teacher, currently teaching Interest Rates and Debt Markets. He has taught many different courses at the undergraduate, MBA and PhD level. He has developed a bond portfolio management game that simulates a bond market with a stochastic term structure. He has also developed and written various computer programs and applications to calculate IRR and NPV, investment exercises, etc. Dr. Patterson has been a faculty member at the University of Michigan School of Business and has taught various MBA, undergraduate, and Ph.D. level courses at other universities. He has served as a Visiting Professor of Economics at the University of California- Santa Barbara and as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Patterson's primary area of research is the behavior of stock market prices. This includes both the empirical and statistical behavior of prices, and the theory of stock market price dynamics. He has been the author and co-author for over 20 scholarly articles and papers, as well as a book. His publications have appeared in journals such as the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Econometrics, and the Journal of the American Statistical Association.
Dr. Patterson worked as an Electrical Engineer at Westinghouse Electric Corporation from 1968 to 1971.
Dr. Patterson served as the Director of the Finance Ph.D. Program for 5 years. He has also chaired the Pamplin Business Computer Committee for two separate terms. He served as Chairman of the Faculty and Student Awards Committee. He has been a member of various departmental and college committees.
Dr. Patterson has been a reviewer and referee for many academic journals and organizations including the National Science Foundation, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of the American Statistical Association and the Journal of Political Economy. He has made 25 appearances on professional programs and seminars, including presentations in the Netherlands and England. He is a member of the American Finance Association and the American Economic Association.
